We had a great time at the Santa Fe Business and Job EXPO last Thursday. The big winner of our ZOOM Whitening raffle is Anthony B. Congratulations Anthony!
This year there was more of an effort to attract visitors with dance and exercise exhibitions. Jazzercise and ballroom dancing entertained the less coordinated masses.
A big hit was our whitening display which featured Jasmine Dental Barbie giving Snow White dental patient Baribe a fabulous new smile! See our vidoe link below>>>>>

Two years ago we spent a week in Honolulu for continuing education and some fun in the sun. The days were spent in lectures at the annual meeting of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry — evenings were spent dining out, whale watching sunset cruise, and other events sponsed by the conference.
Last year we went to Dallas for the same AACD meeting and had fun just hanging out at the Texas Gaylord Resort in Grapevine, just outside Dallas.
We have an exciting adventure planned with the New Mexico Dental Association this summer and will fill you in on more details when the time comes.
We just like to have fun while we learn to serve you better. Cheers

It has been over a year and a half since we started sponsoring live music at RainbowVision’s SilverStarlight Room. The offering has ranged from Broadway standards, gypsy polka music and jazz… to Spanish folk, open mike and more. There tends to be a group of regulars who appreciate live local music and they don’t want to miss a single event. But there are always a group of newcomers who go on about how they can’t believe that Santa Fe is lucky enough to have the kind of talent like we do.
Come join us every second Thursday of the month from 7 – 9pm and see and hear for yourself. There’s a cash bar and we provide the desserts. Check out the photos of the most most recent show by the sensational tenor Kenny Brown.

Railrunner Madness

Our office is doing our part in supporting the public transportation system. As you can see in the photo from the front page of the Journal North Dec 18, 2008 – the first day the train ran – Veronica and Laura stood there on the platform in the snow excitedly waiting for the doors to open. The ride was delayed by about 45 minutes and on the way home that evening the train hit a cow and was delayed another hour… but it was a great experience nonetheless. Laura continues to commute on the train and says that there is a whole train culture of people who get to know each other and share commuting stories.

Santa Fe Adult Hockey League

A proud victory for Dr. Parker and his team, the Chiefs, after a long eight month season of league games. Richard took up hockey two years ago after being inspired by both of his sons who were playing in the youth hockey league. It took a while to get used to the skating style which is very different from the casual skating in circles at the rink during the public skate times at kids’ birthday parties. There are quite a few people who play in the adult leagues of varying skill levels who grew up playing organized hockey or even pond hockey. It’s a fast paced sport and a great workout!

Another African Connection

Our friend Jenny Parks has been instrumental in developing a non-profit which supplies medical aid to a village in Camaroon. Her association with artist Issa Nyaphaga, who was raised in a village in Camaroon, has made it possible for the organization that Nyaphaga created, Hope Internation for Tikar People (hitip.org) to take crutches, wheelchairs and medical supplies to the isolated central African country. We were happy to be able to give Jenny and Issa boxes of gloves and other disposables which are desperately needed in the impoverished country.

Nurse Thembeni Mdluli had never traveled out of Swaziland, neither owned a toothbrush nor seen so many white people before her trip to Santa Fe. Her parents named her Nurse because they’d hoped she’d grow up to be a nurse. Nurse is a sisal basket weaver from Ncheka, a remote village in the Lowveld of the Kingdom of Swaziland. When I first told her that her application to participate at the Santa Fe Folk Art Market 2009 had been successful, she screamed, cried and thanked God for such an opportunity, needless to say that she’d been unable to sleep for the entire week before the trip.

At the Market, Nurse was amazed at how interested people were, buyers wanted to know what her baskets were made of and what her life in Swaziland was like. As a breadwinner, Nurse is also a caregiver to her elderly mother, nieces, nephews and grandchildren who have all been orphaned, in the main, due to the rampant HIV AIDS pandemic in Swaziland. When asked why she wove baskets, she answered without hesitation, ‘to feed my family, pay school fees for my charges, and perhaps buy school shoes for my grandchildren’. It was whilst talking to us that Ann Woodward, a volunteer on Nurse’s stand, offered to host Nurse at her home for steak- real steak, for dinner (I want to believe this is where Nurse’s journey really began). As fate would have it, Nurse suffered from a toothache, add ice cold soup and Nurse was in tears as Anne flipped through her phone book trying to get a dentist to see Nurse the following day.

After several frantic calls by Ann, Dr Richard Parker agreed to see her at 0730 hrs the next morning and a referral to Dr. Ray Martin ensured that between the two Doctors, Nurse received a free complete mouth/teeth scan, cleaning and whitening, two teeth extracted and a generous donation of toothbrushes and toothpastes. Walking out of Dr. Parker’s and Dr Martin’s offices, Nurse looked at me and said, ‘the orphaned and vulnerable children in my village will learn how to brush their teeth.’

Today (July 25, 2009), I drove to Nurse’s village because her Chief had summoned me. He too wants to know about Nurse’s travel ‘around the world’ as he calls it. The entire village has gathered at the Magojela Soup Kitchen which is where the orphaned and vulnerable children of Ncheka gather to receive at least meal a day (when they have stock). There are smiles everywhere, and for once in her life Nurse is the center of attraction as she distributes the toothbrushes. A little girl tugs at my finger and asks, ‘Is it Christmas today?’

To Dr. Parker and Martin, thank you for making the children in Nurse’s world smile. What probably amounted to nothing to you has been Christmas to 46 orphans at the Magojela Soup Kitchen. To Ann, Tom, Ray and Linda, we salute you. Thank you for a steak dinner that was a catalyst and as Nurse rightly said that night, ‘May God continue to guide you and light your footpath.’
