Implants

In the past decade, there has been a definite trend toward replacing missing teeth with dental implants. Before, a lost tooth was replaced by a bridge or partial denture. But today’s advanced technology gives you the option of a more permanent solution.

What is a dental implant?
An implant is a small titanium fixture that replaces the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the jawbone and is covered by a permanent, ceramic crown. Implants are usually the best option for replacing missing teeth because they are anchored securely in the jaw and have much better function than a bridge or dentures. Also, they look great!

Do I still have to have a bridge?
No! That’s one of the greatest advantages to an implant. The teeth around a missing tooth remain healthy and intact; whereas with a bridge, the adjacent teeth have to be ground down to anchor the bridge.

How is an implant done?
Dr. Parker will examine your teeth and take x-rays of the area. After the treatment plan has been determined and agreed upon, we will refer you to a specialist who we have a working relationship with so that the end result is a well positioned implant that can receive a natural looking crown to complement your smile.

During the healing time for the implant to integrate with the bone, Dr. Parker will provide a temporary tooth until it is time for the permanent tooth to be attached to the implant. The function of implants is superior to any other form of replacement and there is no further treatment that is needed – just regular hygiene visits to keep the tooth and gum around it clean and healthy.

Do implants look good?
Absolutely, yes! The cosmetic result of an implant is far superior to any other option. You can’t tell the difference between an implant and your natural teeth. Additionally, an implant helps to preserve the overall structure of your jaw and face. Many people don’t know that when you lose a tooth, the jaw shrinks in that area. A dental implant can halt this process.

Is the treatment painful?
Whenever surgical procedures are performed, some discomfort can be expected. Anesthesia and sedation are used to decrease the stress and pain of the procedure. Most people report feeling much more comfortable following the procedure than they had expected.

Are implants expensive?
The fees for implants depend on several factors, including the number of teeth involved and the number of implants required to support your replacement teeth. There is a separate fee for the surgical procedure performed by the specialist.

The overall value of an implant is well worth the expense, however. Not only does an implant function better than a bridge or denture and gives you a beautiful cosmetic result, but also the likelihood that it will have to be replaced is much less. Statistics show a success rate of nearly 95% for individual implants and dental implants placed over 35 years ago are still functioning and healthy today.
