Neuromuscular Dentistry

Though the name may sound intimidating, Neuromuscular Dentistry is not. It is a proven science that addresses the health of the bite and jaw.

Neuromuscular Dentistry is a gentle approach to repairing the relationship of the jaw joint (TMJ) to the skull, thus eliminating the pain associated with bite problems, called malocclusion. Many people who have tried the more traditional treatments for TMD without success are excited to learn about this highly effect, non-invasive treatment.

Why is the health of the bite and jaw
relevant to dentistry?

Quite simply, the jaw is the foundation of the smile. If the position of the bite is off, even slightly, many symptoms associated with TMJ/TMD can result.

Whenever someone has malocclusion the overall health of the teeth and gums is compromised. In addition to TMD, the overall structure of the teeth and gums are weakened when under the constant stress of malocclusion.

What kind of technology do you use in neuromuscular dentistry?
Dr. Parker uses a computerized jaw tracking system (Myotronics K7) to study the various positions of your jaw when in motion and at rest. The Dental Design Studio is the only practice in Northern New Mexico with this technology and the extensive training required to interpret the numerous scans created by the K7.

We also use a TENS Unit (Transcutaneous Electronic Neural Stimulator) to reduce pain and relax the chronically strained muscles of the jaw, neck and head. Many people feel immediate relief with the very first treatment.

After compiling all the data, Dr. Parker may diagnose malocclusion and recommend a treatment plan that will gently correct your bite and alleviate pain and discomfort.

How can you help me?
To correct malocclusion, Dr. Parker comfortably repositions your jaw with dental restorations to raise or lower your bite to a natural, stress-free position.

In most cases, an orthotic is created to gradually and easily shift your jaw and teeth to a comfortable position.

What is an orthotic?
The orthotic is an acrylic dental appliance made from impressions taken of the mouth and mounted on an articulator to determine the proper plane of occlusion. Once that has been established, the orthotic is fashioned by a neuromuscular dental laboratory. When worn consistently, the orthotic gently re-trains the muscles of the face, neck and head so that the jaw returns to a natural and pain-free position.

How long do you have to wear the orthotic?
Each case varies and depends upon the severity of malocclusion and how consistently the orthotic is worn. In the majority of cases, proper jaw position can be restored in a matter of weeks or a few months.

Once the jaw realigns, your teeth are restored cosmetically into the naturally comfortable position. This is one of the most rewarding areas of our work at the Dental Design Studio and why we say that we are “Creating Smiles of Health and Beauty”!!
