We believe that our patients value a dental office that takes steps to make sure that they are in a safe environment and respects the fact that the materials that we use have an impact on the world around us.
That is the reason why we have been a mercury free office for many years now and make sure that when we remove these hazardous old fillings we do it in a way that protects you and us. We use a filtration system called the Dent-Air-Vac® that is positioned near the patient’s mouth during removal of the amalgam fillings and pulls the vapors that are produced away and caught in a series of filters. Since the greatest risk of exposure when removing these fillings is through the vapors and not the particulate matter, we have used this proven system for years to keep the air clean around us.
We also began using amalgam traps to pull out the particles of old mercury/amalgam fillings from the waste water so that it doesn’t get into the water supply. We started using this years before the city began mandating the use of the separators.
Of course, we follow universal precautions according to the guidelines set up by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These standards are created for the purpose of protecting workers in the workplace but also are important for the protection of consumers.
We have had digital x-rays for several years now to minimize the radiation exposure when taking the necessary images of teeth. People are amazed to learn that taking a series of x-rays can be no more exposure than sitting in front of a computer monitor for a few minutes – something that we all do for much longer periods of time.
